Simulations/Gift Exchange – December 3

The trainers set up four simulations for us to practice our language. We could go visit Onofia and his “family” in the training fale and practice the proper way to greet the family when visiting a home. We could also go to Leata’s store and ask her how much things were and what things were. The funniest one was Faleseu’s taxi. I took the taxi with two other guys and the “taxi driver” asked me if I was married and if I wanted a Samoan boyfriend as he was groping me. It was a lesson learned: Never sit in the front seat with a taxi driver – lol. Setu stood on the side of the road as a “sole” (dude) that you could stop and have a conversation with. It was a lot of fun and made me realize how much time and effort they put into us learning and grasping the language.
That night, our families dressed us in matching puletasis and the trainers in their own matching pattern and took us to the church. The pastor read some verses from the Bible and gave us a short sermon. They then gave us snacks and started giving us gifts. For about 10-15 minutes woman by woman would come up and drop off gifts. We ended up with over 80 lava lavas and other Samoan trinkets. We (Peace Corps) ended up giving them money. We also decided to perform our Sasa dance as a thank you for all the gifts they gave us.
